We have an old Atari 800XL computer--great little machine, but started having stability issues, crashes, etc. Resetting the machine seemed to help, but after a while even powering it on/off didn't bring it back to life.
So, more drastic measures were required.....
Opened up the case, and found that if certain parts of the main board were shorted with some conductive material (spare screwdriver, for example) the system would do a super-reset, and regain functionality for a limited time.
For some strange reason, this method seemed to loose it's effectiveness over time.......never been the same since. :(
